What is a UPI soundbox?
A UPI soundbox is anything that says a payment out loud so you do not have to look at a screen. It started as a small speaker rented from a payment company. Today it can also be an app on the phone you already have.
The device kind
Paytm, PhonePe, BharatPe and others rent or sell a battery-powered speaker tied to their QR code. When a customer pays that QR, the company's server tells the box and the box announces the amount. It is reliable for its own QR and loud. Its limits: it announces only payments to that company's QR, it needs charging and its own SIM, and it carries a rental or a purchase price.
The app kind
A soundbox app runs on your Android phone. Every UPI app and bank app already shows a notification when money arrives. The app reads that notification, with your permission, and speaks it. Because it works from notifications, one app covers Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM and the bank apps at once, in whichever language you pick. There is nothing to charge, and the cost is a subscription rather than hardware.
The limit of the app kind is the mirror of its strength: it can only announce what the phone receives. If a payment app's notifications are off, or the phone is switched off, there is no announcement.

Questions to ask before choosing
- Which apps do my customers actually pay with? Count a day.
- Does the counter have a charger and a safe place for a device?
- Do I want the records (totals, cashbook, reports) or only the voice?
- Can I try before paying? Device rentals usually bind you; an app with a free trial does not.

Questions
Is a soundbox app safe?
A well-built one never asks for your UPI PIN, bank login or card. It reads payment notifications only. Check the app's privacy policy and the permissions it asks for before granting notification access.
Does a soundbox app need internet?
The announcement does not. The payment app needs internet to receive the payment, and once its notification appears the announcement plays.
Can I use both?
Yes. Many shops keep a device for one QR and run an app for every other payment.
