A payment came in but nothing was announced

Nearly every silent payment comes down to one of five things, and the app's status card usually names it. Work through the list in order.

1. Is the app listening?

Open UPI Alert. The status card at the top should say Listening for payments. If it says anything else, tap it. It takes you to the setting that went off, most often notification access or battery optimisation after a system update.

2. Did the payment app show a notification?

UPI Alert can only announce a notification that the phone received. Pull down the notification shade: is there a “received” notification from Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm? If not, open that payment app's notification settings and turn payment alerts on. Also check that the payment app is not in a battery-saver list that blocks its notifications.

3. Battery and Autostart

Xiaomi, vivo, OPPO, realme and OnePlus phones stop background apps unless Autostart and “no battery restrictions” are on for UPI Alert. The phone-specific setup guide lists the exact menus. After a reboot, open the app once so it starts listening again.

4. Volume, silent mode and Bluetooth

Announcements play on the media volume. Raise it. If the phone is on silent or Do Not Disturb, the chime may be muted while the voice still plays, or both may be muted depending on the phone. If a Bluetooth speaker or earphones were connected earlier, the announcement may be playing there.

5. Trial or plan

If the free trial has ended and no plan is active, payments are detected and listed but not spoken, and a once-a-day notification tells you so. Open Settings → Plan to see the status and start a plan, which is billed by Google Play.

Still silent?

Use Test announcement in Settings. If the test plays but real payments do not, the issue is in step 2 or 3. If the test does not play either, it is step 4, or the phone's text-to-speech engine needs the language data downloaded: Settings → System → Languages → Text-to-speech output → install voice data for your language. Write to auspoapps@gmail.com with your phone model if none of this helps.

Questions

It announces some payments but not others.

Check which app the missed ones came from and whether that app's notification appeared. A payment app that is itself battery-restricted will show notifications late or not at all.

It announces twice.

Two apps showed a notification for the same payment, for example a UPI app and the bank app. Turn off the duplicate in Settings → Apps to announce, or keep both if you prefer the confirmation.

Does the app announce payments I send?

No. Only money received is announced.
