Guide · UPI Alert
How UPI Alert works
UPI Alert is not a bank and not a payment app. It is a listener for one kind of notification and a voice that reads it out. Knowing exactly what it does makes the permission screens easy to understand.
The one thing it reads
When money arrives, your UPI app or bank app shows a notification such as “You received ₹250 from Ravi Kumar”. Android lets an app with notification access see notifications. UPI Alert uses that access to look only at notifications from the 57 payment and bank apps it knows. Everything else, from WhatsApp to your SMS, is ignored and never read.
What happens next
- The notification is parsed on the phone to find the amount, the payer and the app.
- A chime plays and the amount is spoken in your chosen language, using the phone's own speech engine.
- The payment is added to today's list and the cashbook so the day's total and reports stay current.
What it never does
- It never asks for your UPI PIN, bank login, card number or OTP.
- It cannot send, receive, hold or move money. It has no connection to NPCI or any bank.
- It does not read personal messages. Only notifications from supported payment and bank apps are processed.
Why the other permissions
Battery optimisation. Android stops background apps to save battery. Exempting UPI Alert keeps the listener alive all day, with the screen off. The always-on notification. A small persistent notification is how Android allows a listener to keep running. The home screen shows a status card so you can see at a glance that the app is listening, and it tells you what to fix if a phone setting switches it off.
What is stored and where
Your payment history is kept under an anonymous account so that reports and the cashbook work across reinstalls. No name, phone number or bank detail is required to use the app. The privacy policy lists what is stored and why, and the delete your data page explains how to remove it.
Questions
Can the app see my bank balance?
No. It sees the text of a payment notification and nothing else. Balance, statements and account details are never accessed.
What if I revoke notification access?
Announcements stop immediately, and the home screen shows which setting to turn back on. Nothing else about your phone changes.
Is my data sold or shared?
No. See the privacy policy for the full list of what is stored. Payment history is used only to show you your own totals and reports.
